STATUS
Summer visitor and migrant with some wintering birds.

ABUNDANCE
Scarce in general: more frequent during passage.

HABITAT
Breeds in broadleaved woods, mainly Sweet-Chestnut woods, Cork-Oak woods and riparian thickets, providing there are many ant-rich clearings (its favourite food). More flexible on migration, turning up even in the campiña. In winter sticks almost exclusively to livestock farming dehesas.

SEASONAL BEHAVIOUR
Most are detected from March to September, although there are increasing records of wintering birds.

DISTRIBUTION
As a breeder it is rare in the eastern half and more frequent in Huelva and Seville. Winter sightings in all four provinces.
