STATUS
Sedentary.

ABUNDANCE
Common.

HABITAT
Woodland of all types providing it is not too dense. Typically seen in dehesas and areas of Mediterranean scrub with scattered trees though also turns up on the edges of pinewoods and closed-canopy Eucalyptus woods and even in pseudosteppe and on rocks (e.g. at Cerro del Hierro). Often seen feeding on the ground.

SEASONAL BEHAVIOUR
Seen all year.

DISTRIBUTION
Well distributed throughout Sierra Morena.

COMMENTS
Many scholars believe that the Iberian subspecies (sharpei), differing significantly from the nominate, should be classed a species in its own right.
