STATUS
Migrant, with some breeding birds and other vagrants.

ABUNDANCE
Very scarce as a breeder (c. 10 pairs), and scarce as migrant and vagrant.

HABITAT
Reservoirs and rivers. Nests in riparian woodland and reedmace beds.

SEASONAL BEHAVIOUR
Most often sighted from April to September.

DISTRIBUTION
The only proven breeding site is the River Guadalquivir near El Salto reservoir. Other sites where it is frequently spotted in summer (vagrants) are River Sillo, Azud del Esparragal and River Viar, and El Encinarejo and El Rincón on the River Jándula. On passage could turn up on any watercourse.

COMMENTS
Most sightings fit in with the pattern of vagrant and dispersing birds from the colonies of Extremadura and Doñana or non breeders moving between wetlands of the south. This explains the summer sightings in areas where it does not breed.
