STATUS
Migrant and summer visitor.

ABUNDANCE
Scarce in most of the territory.

HABITAT
Nests in mature broadleaved woods with old gnarled trees full of nesting crannies (Sweet-Chestnut woods, Cork-Oak woods, Pyrenean-Oak woods); a few birds also breed in pinewoods, olive groves and orchards or even in clumps of introduced trees. On passage seen in both wooded and open areas.

SEASONAL BEHAVIOUR
Breeders get back in April and leave in September, in general terms. Migrant birds are more likely to be seen on post-breeding passage.

DISTRIBUTION
Much more numerous and better distributed in Huelva (where in certain areas of Sierra de Aracena and the Huelva part of Tentudía it is locally abundant) than in the rest. In Jaén breeds in Pyrenean-Oak woods of Sierra Quintana (on the border with Ciudad Real) and maybe in some spots of Despeñaperros. In Córdoba confined to pinewoods in Villaviciosa de Córdoba, where it readily takes to nest boxes. In Seville, even though there are many Mediterranean woods that in theory seem ideal for the species, it has only been found in some pinewoods of Almadén de la Plata.

COMMENTS
The present breeding records in Jaén represent the first cases of proven breeding in eastern Sierra Morena. Andalusia’s main population is in Sierra de Aracena y Picos de Aroche.
