STATUS
Summer visitor and migrant.

ABUNDANCE
Uncommon as migrant, its numbers varying from year to year. Rare and local as breeder.

HABITAT
Breeds in Pyrenean-Oak woods and stands of old Sweet Chestnuts surrounded by pinewoods. On passage may be recorded in any type of woodland and even open areas.

SEASONAL BEHAVIOUR
Passage peaks in April-May and late August to late September. Breeding birds are seen between those two periods.

DISTRIBUTION
The tiny breeding population nests in Pyrenean-Oak woods of Sierra Quintana, right on the border of Jaén with Ciudad Real (at about 1150 masl); several singing males and food-carrying adults were seen here in 2011. Neither can its breeding be ruled out in two small Chestnut copses of Despeñaperros at a lower altitude (820 masl), where singing males have been recorded in several springs.
