STATUS
Sedentary and winter visitor.

ABUNDANCE
Very scarce.

HABITAT
Lives and breeds in wetland and riparian vegetation, especially reedmace beds, Phragmites reedbeds and some Poplar woods. Its breeding sites usually have a combination of all these habitats.

SEASONAL BEHAVIOUR
The breeding populations seem to be sedentary. In some spots it is seen only in winter (November to February or March).

DISTRIBUTION
As a breeder confined to the thickets of the River Guadalquivir, more or less continuously from El Salto Reservoir to Santa Potenciana (Villanueva de la Reina), with another population further west around the final reaches of the River Bembézar (southern Hornachuelos). Also seems to breed at Zocueca Reservoir. Does not breed in the western half though there are wintering records in the small reservoir of Minas de Cala and La Roncadera.
