SE-5. A Wood in Stone

  • This trail coincides with paths of the Park.
  • Binoculars. A camera is almost a must on this trail.
  • Rocks and crags
  • Mediterranean scrub
  • Pastureland
  • Spring and summer (March to August). Also well worth a look during the rest of the year.
  • Dawn and dusk visits are best, when there are fewer tourists.
The Natural Monument called Cerro del Hierro is one of the sierra’s most popular beauty spots. Karstic modelling over time has made it stunningly photogenic today. The trail passes amongst tree-like shafts of rock called agujas, forming a sort of “petrified” wood inhabited by Alpine Swift, Black Redstart, Black Stork, Blue Rock Thrush, Rock Bunting, Rock Sparrow, White-Rumped Swift and Red-Rumped Swallow. This is also the best local spot for orchids and fossils. More information in the book Birding and Nature Trails in Sierra Morena Sevillana.
