The Ciudadeja is one of the prime rivers of Sierra Morena Sevillana, with crystalline water and splendid riparian woodland still forming solid galleries or carrs in parts. Stunning oakwoods are the tonic of the surrounding area, with a mix of Cork Oaks, Holm Oaks and Portuguese Oaks, some of them magnificent specimens of their type. Woodland birds are the star turn here, with breeding Iberian Chiffchaff, Firecrest and Wryneck. Winter visitors include Bullfinch. Other residents like the dragonfly Orange Spotted Emerald and Montpellier Maple are good “canary-in-the-mine” species. More information in the book Birding and Nature Trails in Sierra Morena Sevillana.
