SE-15. Retortillo Reservoir

  • Belongs to the Nature Park鈥檚 network of public facilities.
  • Binoculars. Telescope recommendable.
  • Artificial wetland (reservoir)
  • Cork-Oak woods and Mediterranean scrub
  • Dehesas
  • All year barring summer (November to April).
  • Midday in cold months or mid-morning otherwise.
A charming scene opens out before our eyes from this lookout point. In the foreground lies the reservoir itself surrounded by hills cloaked in Cork Oak, Portuguese Oak and patches of scrubland overflown by the stunning Spanish Festoon butterfly. Scanning the sky we might see Griffon- and Cinereous-Vulture, Sparrow Hawk in winter, Golden-, Short-Toed- or Booted-Eagle, and, with a touch more luck, Black Stork or Osprey on passage. This is the only local breeding site of Great Crested Grebe. More information in the book Birding and Nature Trails in Sierra Morena Sevillana.
