STATUS
Breeding birds are usually sedentary. There are also some wintering birds.

ABUNDANCE
Very scarce.

HABITAT
A water bird that lives on small reservoirs and sluggish river stretches with bankside vegetation.

SEASONAL BEHAVIOUR
In wintering areas remains at least from November to February.

DISTRIBUTION
In breeding season confined to River Guadalquivir (El Salto, Marmolejo Reservoir), some small reservoirs (Zocueca, La Roncadera) and favourable stretches of River Guadiato. Winters in other wetlands like Minas de Cala Reservoir or River Guadiato itself.

COMMENTS
A difficult bird to study because of its skulking behaviour, nocturnal habits and love of thick wet vegetation; for all these reasons it is far more often heard than seen.
