STATUS
Winter visitor and migrant.

ABUNDANCE
Uncommon.

HABITAT
Muddy edges and beaches of watercourses of all types, puddled meadows, reservoir shores, ponds, and in general any wetland with soft bare ground.

SEASONAL BEHAVIOUR
Apart from early arrivals not usually seen in any numbers until October. Stays until March or April, some lingering on until May.

DISTRIBUTION
Although scarce in absolute terms it seems to be well distributed on wetlands throughout. Large winter flocks sometimes build up at El Salto on the River Guadalquivir.

COMMENTS
Feeds by probing in the soil with its long beak (winning it the local nickname of pitorra) so it needs soft moist ground.
